Hallingspranget
Nesbyen
HallingSpranget is one of Northern Europe's longest family-friendly purpose built bike trails. This 17 km ride offers a spectacular journey all the way from Nesfjellet and down to the valley floor.
Don't be intimidated by the length! The blue-graded, family-friendly trail has a number of rest stops with seating areas along the way. Take your time, pack a lunch and enjoy the view. HallingSpranget is a memorable trip and great fun even for experienced cyclists. The trail consists of lightly metered turns on a compact gravel surface. The trail has a couple of uphill sections that require you to pedal or roll your bike, including 70 vertical meters at the very beginning. Don't lose heart here! For the most part, the trail goes downhill (a total of 1,000 vertical meters) and most of the time you can just concentrate on adjusting your speed and enjoying the turns.
With a blue grading (medium demanding), this is a trail that most cyclists can master, while also being fun for more experienced cyclists. A few short sections of the trail are slightly steeper and more challenging than the rest (marked as demanding sections). You can wheel your bike through these sections if you wish.
The top kilometers of the trail lie on the snowy mountain and offer spectacular views in all directions. The trail then winds through a spectacular landscape, past marshes and airy viewpoints, through dark and mysterious old-growth forest and open pine forest before ending in Nesbyen town center. The HallingSpranget Foundation is behind the trail and Trailhead Nesbyen has been responsible for its construction.
TIME, EQUIPMENT AND EXPERIENCE
17 km and 1,000 meters of downhill cycling should not be underestimated, especially if you have children with you. The recommended lower age limit is 7 years for children with basic cycling experience. Younger cyclists should have a lot of cycling experience. Families with children normally spend between 2 and 4 hours from top to bottom. Fast cyclists spend around 1 hour down.
The tour requires endurance and basic cycling skills. Good brakes and tires with some width are important, especially for inexperienced and young cyclists. Mountain bikes with suspension forks are recommended. Full suspension is not necessary, but makes the ride more comfortable. A bicycle trolley is not recommended.
